Happy New Year!

Both of these photos were both ruined by light leaks (aka carelessness on my part) but were revived by the scanner. I'm pleased with them but unfortunately, I don't think I will ever be able to make gelatin silver prints. These and the photos below were from my trip to NC except the one of Annie Cohn, which I took right after I got back. I'm excited about these photos, I will probably submit at least one of these to Arts Worcester's Consortium show.

I went home to North Carolina over the Thanksgiving weekend to spend some time with my family. My uncle had happed upon a Yashica Mat 124 when going through some of my grandfather's stuff. It is in excellent condition, barely used. If I knew my grandfather it is likely he shot maybe a roll or two and tossed it in a closet somewhere. I pulled a roll of film out that was half exposed, probably shot in 1975. I was worried that the light meter would be off so I over-developed the film a little, which accounts for the greyness.

I have a wealth of film that I shot this summer and today I made my first crack at it. After a frustrating day of wrestling with the scanner, this is all I have to show. After all I am satisfied with a few from this small sample. Hopefully I will have more soon.

These are some film scans from a shoot at a local carnival, this past weekend. They all need to be rescanned and my color correction is kinda shoddy, but I'm satisfied with the stuff I got. I still have more to develop/scan.

Last night, Math the Band and Andrew W.K. played in the Grind at Clark University. I covered the event for ROCU's website and these are only a few of what I got. I still have tons more unedited and I wish I had thought ahead enough to put the Math the Band photos before the AWK photos but no one is perfect. I had a blast at this show. Both Math and AWK were great and the whole show had an incredible energy. I was sitting on the stage for most of these and at the end of the show I was trampled by the crowd trying to get past me. But my camera and I are fine and I have walked away with some cool images and only a few bruises to show for it. I never thought it would happen, but finally spring has come to Worcester. It is a strange time of year; sun is out but the leaves haven't grown back yet so the trees are bare. The light reflects off of everything creating a an unusual brightness. It can be hard to photograph at times but it's really beautiful. These images are from my latest Worcester exploration. Hopefully I will be doing this alot this summer.

I have nothing to add this week other than old film scans. I happened upon this contact sheet last night and thought some of these might be worth scanning. I shot them last summer and, even though they are not great, it was something I had been thinking about for a long time. Each of these were 15-20 minute exposures, taken with my 35mm Canon F-1. Hopefully next week I will add some more recent work.

Here is my best from this past week. My friend Sam was kind enough to lend himself to this project. This image is ok but I feel that I can do better with him so I am going to try to arrange a reshoot. I had some trouble processing the film which resulted in reticulation so the image quality is terrible, another reason to reshoot. I don't have to much more to say about this. I think I am also going to attempt a self portrait this week, but those are always really difficult.

I have recently made a habit of carrying a Holga and a flash with me everywhere. Maybe its because I got used to always having in Italy, but its light weight and easy to use, it only shoots on one setting. So I have been snapping portraits of whomever catches my eye and, as a result, I have been seeing good portraits everywhere. I don't know if the Holga images are any good but I have been revisiting these portraits and capturing essentially what I saw before with my 4x5 camera. This is my roommate working on a mixed media project; she is decorating eggs. I really like the light in this image, even though the negative is a little thin and my shadows are lacking detail. Maeve often brings out a very regal side when I start photographing her and I think it is apparent here.

More from Rome. Like I mentioned before, the only film I shot in Italy was with a Holga because I figured if they didn't turn out I wouldn't be devastated. These are three images that I immediately liked. I have shot a ton of stuff with the Holga, just for fun, and I have collected several images that I like but I couldn't necessarily use for anything. So I'm thinking I'm going to make a book of my favorite Holga images. Probably not any time soon...

So I just spent last week in Italy, visiting a friend living in Siena. It was an amazing trip but I'm not satisfied with the images I made. Since I have been back I have had the same conversation over and over with teachers and friends about how hard it is to make good pictures while traveling. My favorite images are the ones I took of Hannah's (pictured above) apartment, which is no real surprise considering I spent a few days there and became familiar with the space. I also made a quick portrait of her, seeing as portraiture is my focus for the semester. Shooting with my digital camera all week really made me miss my 4x5. I shot some film with a Holga because I figured, after being scanned a couple times it would be worthless. I developed a role of B&W and it came out so I have high hopes for my color film. I shot more portraits with the Holga, so we will see how they come out. I may post more pictures from my trip if I warm up to them. Time will tell.

For once in my two and a half years in Massachusetts, I found myself inspired by snow. Walking home from the photo lab, I noticed how bright it was with the street lights reflecting off the snow. It almost looked like day time. So when I got home I grabbed Maeve, who loves the snow and all things winter, and my 4x5. My favorite is the bottom image, which came out pretty well exposed, much to my surprise. The top is a crop of the original; the jacket I used to protect my camera from the snow sneaked into my frame. I will shoot it over if we get anymore nighttime snow storms.

This past week I finally took the time to scan a bunch of film from as far back as last August. These are two images from Thanksgiving, 2008. I mounted a flash on a holga and photographed everyone direct, which really emphasized the vignetting effect of the holga. I love the top image because it is so indicative of my mom and my brother. Plus I like the photos of my uncle graduating from the police academy in the upper right corner. Both images are a little off in their color but they are holga images and it doesn't bother me as much.

Three new ones this week. The past few days have been crazy in my house. Both of my roommates had family visiting, which quickly filled my little apartment. The top photo is a crop of the original, which is unusual for me. Especially since I started using the view camera, I have tried to avoid cropping but it really improved this photo. Maeve is very close with her family and I wanted a photo of her with her brother and father. I like how her father is out of focus in the foreground; a prominent figure but quietly observing the interaction between his children. I wish I had moved the lamp that hovers just above Maeve's head but I had to act fast. Oh well. I finally got a wide angle lens on my camera and it has given me a lot more freedom. I re-shot my friend Jon but this time I put him outside on his porch. The way the camera looks down at him and his slouched posture is really comical considering how tall he is. These images have good texture and great shadow detail. I couldn't decide which of these I liked better so I have posted them both. I'm open to opinions.

Another week of following around my roommates. The bottom photo shows my roommate Angela in the library, a place we frequently go together. I like this portrait of her even though the focus is a little off. I want to photograph her again in the library because I have a couple more ideas and there just wasn't time this week. I switching to a new 4x5 camera with a wide angle lens, which I'm way more comfortable with. I had a basic lesson in focal length this week; I had to make a recessed lens board to accommodate the wide angle lens on the new camera. I really love shooting in large format. Each of these images, despite their artistic quality, are far more important to me than anything I have ever shot on my digital camera.

Finally I've made my first real, stupid mistakes with this large format camera. Super thin negatives and accidental double exposures are plentiful in this new careless phase. And so this is the best I have for this week. I plan to reshoot both of these with some changes. Luckily the ideas are still flowing in abundance. Unlike last semester I'm trying to capture more candid moments. There are still elements of my meticulously constructed shoots, however, considering I have to set up the camera and lights. More to come....

These are my first 4x5 images. The bottom image, Thomas On The Porch, is the first one I ever shot with the new camera. It is a little under exposed but I am pretty proud of it. The top image, Angela's Worst Portrait, shows me that I'm getting a better hold on manipulating my focus, which was the reason I started working with this camera. I am entering these two images in a student show hosted by Arts Worcester. It has been a long week, but two ruined mats and one piece of broken glass later the images are in and I'm excited to see what happens next. I don't expect to place but I hope both of these pieces make it into the show. I put a price on them and they are up for sale but I'm worried I wont be able to part with them. Luckily I probably wont have to.
